Jun 30, 2023

Recently, the production of edible mushrooms at Monterey Mushrooms in the United States is proceeding in an orderly manner.

"The U.S. Department of Agriculture calls edible mushrooms other than Agaricus bisporus and Agaricus martensii as characteristic mushrooms, and the common ones are Lentinus edodes, Pleurotus ostreatus, Hericium erinaceus, etc." Mr. Stephen, vice president of sales and business development of Monterey Mushrooms, said in an interview that the company has sufficient supply of characteristic mushrooms. Compared with the same period last year, the total output of characteristic mushrooms has increased by 9.7%, and the value of characteristic mushrooms has increased by 32% over the same period last year.

The Agricultural Marketing Service of the United States Department of Agriculture divides characteristic mushrooms into three groups, namely shiitake mushrooms, oysters, and other varieties. Mr. Stephen said, "The company's shiitake mushroom production increased by 8%, while shiitake mushroom production decreased, while the production of other varieties increased by 50%. In fact, the production of other varieties has been increasing, even faster than shiitake mushrooms

Like other commercially grown edible mushrooms, specialty mushrooms have achieved year-round cultivation. In Pennsylvania, the growers of Agaricus bisporus are highly concentrated, accounting for 60% of the total in the United States. Unlike this, specialty mushroom growers in the United States are not very concentrated and are distributed in most states of the country, "Stephen added.

Monterey Mushrooms was founded in 1971 and now grows over 200 million pounds of fresh mushrooms annually, including bisporus and brown mushrooms.

It is also understood that according to the report data of the United States Department of Agriculture, the prices of shiitake and pleurotus are flat compared with the previous year, while the prices of characteristic mushrooms such as maitake, crab flavored mushrooms, Pleurotus eryngii and Hericium erinaceus have increased by 16%.
