Canada: Growing Mushrooms in Shipping Containers To Create Innovative Money Scenery
May 11, 2023
Recently, Canadian vertical agricultural startup Adapt AgTech announced a partnership with Reef Technology to launch sea freight containers for mushroom cultivation in major US cities such as Austin.

After this collaboration, Adapt AgTech will leverage Reef Technology's strong network to place its sea freight containers a few steps away from restaurants and grocery stores, eliminating the need to pay exorbitant rent in cities such as the city center.
Currently, Adapt AgTech has opened planting containers in Austin, and in the next few years, the startup plans to expand to more than 50 cities including Boston, Chicago, San Francisco, Seattle, and Miami.
Compared to green leafy vegetables, edible mushrooms are more suitable for container planting because they do not require a lot of light, only need to control temperature and humidity, and the energy consumption during the planting process is lower. In addition, they are movable and have no seasonal restrictions, which is also a characteristic of this planting mode, "said Mr. Murray, founder of Adapt AgTech.
According to data, Adapt AgTech is committed to using substrates such as sawdust, coffee grounds, and coconut blocks to grow rare and trendy edible mushrooms, including Pleurotus ostreatus, Pleurotus eryngii, Hericium erinaceus, and Tricholoma matsutake. After deploying its first container mushroom farm in Toronto in June last year, the company has achieved rapid expansion in Canada.
