European Countries Are Facing The Problem Of Discontinuing The Production Of Edible Mushrooms

Jun 07, 2023

Recently, Champion Cooperative, one of Spain's major mushroom producers, announced that the rise in prices of straw and other materials is affecting the development of the mushroom cultivation industry.

Due to the impact of the arid climate, straw is becoming increasingly scarce, leading to a significant increase in its prices. As a result, some European countries have stopped producing mushrooms, "said Champion Chairman Olmeda.

According to Ormeda, in Spain, straw is often used to feed livestock, produce mushrooms, and benefit renewable energy. Due to many renewable energy projects being heavily subsidized by the government, there are more opportunities to obtain straw than mushroom producers or livestock farmers, making straw very popular, "Ormeda said.

Olmeda stated that there are many reasons for the shortage of straw, such as drought, the Ukrainian war, and the rise in fuel and energy prices, mainly natural gas prices, which directly lead to the use of more by-products such as straw to produce renewable energy. In addition, Middle Eastern countries are also purchasing more straw to feed livestock. Another factor is the new regulations prohibiting and reducing the use of plastics, which means that manufacturers in the packaging industry need to use straw to make cardboard packaging, as straw contains cellulose and is suitable for the industry.

We are experiencing a shortage of straw, and the production of edible mushrooms cannot operate normally. We hope the government can help solve this' straw war 'as soon as possible! "Ormeda said.
